NRC-Spelman College Professional Development Program

As part of our grant, we are constructing a collaborative and long-term program with Spelman College to integrate East Asian studies and related global dimensions into the instruction and academic/professional experiences of Spelman students. The program structure will include an annual workshop series for Spelman undergraduate students and a faculty member to come to GW for onsite and offsite visits with East Asian studies experts, scholars, and policymakers. In addition, in order to cultivate institutional linkages between GW and Spelman faculty, and to enhance East Asian studies capacity building at Spelman, our visiting scholars program would have GW extend academic affiliation and access to GW resources for a Spelman faculty member and/or scholar each project year.

Site Visit Partners

Integrating East Asian Studies at Historically Black Colleges & Universities

Non-Resident Scholar Program

The NRC’s Non-Resident Scholar program aims to provide a platform to support the research and expansion of critical discourse on contemporary issues in East Asia. The Non-Resident Scholar program also aims to provide the scholars, researchers, and aspiring policymakers the opportunity to connect with the greater GW and DC scholarly and public policy communities. Scholars will be able to gain access to the following GW resources:

  • GW Gelman Library
  • National Security Archives
  • Global Resources Center (GRC)
  • Network of GW faculty and visiting scholars
  • And much more!

Outreach Expansion with Morehouse College

Acting on its mandate to expand accessibility of East Asian Studies resources to wider audiences, and seeking to build meaningful relationships with HBCUs, the NRC partnered with Morehouse College in planning its annual China Forum event to discuss “America’s Arsenal in a Trade War with China” on February 13th, 2020. The NRC and Morehouse College invited Prof. Yan Bennett, an Elliott School adjunct faculty member, to be the guest speaker in the China Forum event.

Capacity Building

The NRC is actively pursuing to participate in capacity building activities with its HBCU partners. In January 2020, the NRC partnered with Spelman College Prof. Yan Xu to present on “Building Global Curriculum at HBCUs Spelman College, The George Washington University, and the role of NRCs” at the January 2020 Global Studies Symposium on National Research Center, Community College, and Minority-Serving Institution Collaboration at Florida International University in Miami, Florida.

Student Testimony

We here at the NRC would love for aspiring applicants to our program to hear from program alumni themselves about how it has impacted their lives. A long-form blog post from the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) where previous Spelman participants discuss the program can be found on the NHA’s website.

Scholars Meeting with Prof. Jisoo Kim

“As an aspiring U.S. Foreign Service Officer, this program has broadened my professional and academic interests and influenced me to study East Asian regions more critically. Overall, I believe this program is an important opportunity for students outside of D.C., particularly HBCU students, to gain a different perspective of Asian studies and better understand how interconnected political and academic communities are in D.C.”

Fana R. HaileSelassie, C’2021

“There is something to take away for your professional development no matter what stage you are at in your undergraduate matriculation. I would highly recommend this program for anyone who has an interest in East Asia but is unsure of how to be able to incorporate that into their work.”

Marie Angelique Southern, C’2020

“It just made me a lot more excited to travel and learn more things and be more intentional with my language studies. And then it also encouraged me to take more East Asian classes.”

Chayla Cherry, C‘2022

“I learned so much and I’m so excited that I got to have this opportunity in my last semester at Spelman. I think it sums my life up, it completes me.”
