2021-2023 Junior Japan Bowl Resources

J-LEARN (The Japanese Language Education Advocacy and Resource Network) is a coalition of Japanese language teachers at all levels, interested parents, and other stakeholders. It was established in 2016 to respond to proposed cuts in Japanese language programs in the Washington DC area. The focus is on public schools at the K-12 level.

Resources

History Timeline:

This powerpoint is an overview of Japanese history from 1560 to 1868. It covers the important figures, places, events, ideas, and cultural products that appear in the three eras covered by this time span: Muromachi, Azuchi-Momoyama, and Edo. This resource is great for giving students a quick overview of Japan’s unification period and the eventual lead up to the Meiji Restoration in 1868. It is connected to the History Jeopardy game that teachers can use in the classroom to quiz students on what they have learned, or for students to test their own knowledge!

[To take full advantage of the powerpoint’s setup, refer to the How to use the History Timeline document.]

History Jeopardy:

The following game of History Jeopardy is based on the History Timeline powerpoint. This game tests students’ knowledge of Japanese history from 1560 to 1868. Split into people, places, events, and others, the questions get harder as the points increase. Hints for each question, excluding true/false questions and multiple-choice, can be used by clicking once on the slide. Hints can be words or letters, animations, or pictures.

[For more details on how to utilize the jeopardy game and how hints work, see the How to use the Jeopardy Game document.]

Pop Culture Kahoots:

The following Kahoots (interactive quiz game software) were created to teach students about different elements in Japanese pop culture. The Kahoots contain informative slides on anime, manga, movies, J-Pop, popular characters, and snacks in Japan. Japanese terms are also including for those young language learners! After learning about Japanese pop culture, Kahoot presents questions on the information students have learned in a quiz game format. There are also videos to better give students a greater look at Japanese animation and music. Bolded text is used to give visual hints to answer the questions, or emphasize important information. There are two pop culture Kahoots available to teach, learn and play: one for students in grades 1-3, one for students in grades 4-8
