Resources for Students

The NRC, as well as our affiliated institutions offer a number of PhD, graduate, and undergraduate fellowships to provide learning opportunities for students interested in East Asia and East Asian languages. Below are some programs that students can refer to.

Graduate Students

GW Institute for Korean Studies is now accepting applications for the North Korea Program! The program is designed to provide professionals and graduate students (GW and non-GW) with balanced, multi-dimensional information about North Korea. It will help the participants to understand North Korea that is often left as a black box in the policy discussions. This North Korea Program is a one-month intensive course covering from history to future insights of North Korea. Nine lectures will be given on Tuesdays and Thursdays (October 22 – November 21, 2019). It is free of charge. Learn more about the GWIKS North Korea Program on their website.

Foreign Language and Areas Studies (FLAS) Fellowship awards are given to GW students interested in studying Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. The Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Academic Year Fellowship is awarded exclusively to graduate and professional students.

Each year, GW Institute for Korean Studies selects one GW student for the GWIKS Research Assistant Fellowship. The awardee receives full tuition up to 18 credits of tuition remission and a salaried research assistantship working with research, communications, and events implementation at the GW Institute for Korean Studies. For more information on the fellowship and the selection process, please visit the GWIKS page.

For information on funding for graduate students (GW and non-GW) with a focus on Asian Studies and doing field research, please redirect to the Sigur Center’s Asian Field Research Summer Grant.

Undergraduate Students

Foreign Language and Areas Studies (FLAS) Summer Fellowship  awards are given to GW undergraduate (as well as graduate and professional) students interested in studying Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

The GWIKS Undergraduate Research Fellows Program encourages outstanding GW undergraduate students to research on Korea by providing resources and mentoring for their study. Students will connect with GWIKS faculty members and former diplomats (affiliated with DACOR) to participate in an academic/career mentoring program, monthly research workshops, and conferences throughout a one academic year period.

GWIKS offers a summer study abroad program to invite GW students interested in studying Korea to visit various professional sites in South Korea. The program participants will trace the transnational processes of modernization, imperialism, colonization, the Cold War, decolonization, and neoliberalism that have shaped and continue to shape Korean identity and culture.
